The birthstone for April is the diamond or clear quartz, the birthflower is the daisy or sweet pea

The diamond is harder than any other substance on earth because of its carbon structure. It has become a symbol of enduring love.

Diamonds have been prized throughout history, used to decorate crowns, swords and emblems as well as jewellery.  They were also believed to have certain medicinal properties:  during the middle ages, they were thought to heal illness.

Clear quartz

Quartz crystals are the most common and abundant in the world, comprising the largest and most diverse family in the mineral kingdom, composed of silicon dioxide. Clear quartz is also known as rock crystal. Clear Quartz is said to bring strength and clarity to the intellect, aiding concentration and memory retention, and filtering out distractions.

Daisies are from the huge plant family Asteraceae with 23,600 species! the name 'daisy' comes from the Old English "daes eage," meaning "day's eye,"  this is due to how they close their petals in the evening, and open again at dawn. From olden times, the meaning of daisy is 'innocence'. Did you know that they are technically lots of flowers? They have smaller yellow florets which form the yellow centre and each petal is a small flower with its own reproductive parts - the single petal is a fusion of many.

Sweet pea

Sweet peas derive their name from the Greek word 'lathyros' for pea or pulse, and the Latin word 'odoratus' meaning fragrant. Sweet peas come in over 250 varieties. Sweet peas are wonderfully fragrant and were originally grown in the fields of Sicily. The delicate perfume of sweet peas combined with the variety of colors available made this flower the floral sensation of the Victorian era.

In France, it’s a superstition where the sweetpea is believed to be a good omen for the brides. During the Victorian times, giving out sweetpea means “thank you for the lovely time”. It can also mean blissful pleasure, departure or goodbye.
